Retirement Withdrawal & Drawdown Calculator
Inspect an annual retirement cash schedule with indexed spending, a fixed return assumption and explicit unfunded withdrawals after depletion.
Your inputs
Use consistent units and periods. Defaults are examples.
Your result
Check the assumptions below before relying on a result.
Formula and method
Requested portfolio cash in year y=max(0,spending−other income)×(1+inflation)^(y−1). Funded withdrawal=min(available balance, requested cash). Apply the selected beginning/end timing and annual gross growth followed by the asset fee.
Worked example
Starting capital 100, annual spending 40, no other income, no return/fees/inflation and 3 years requests 120 in total. Only 100 is funded; year 3 has 20 unfunded and the ending balance is zero. The shortfall remains visible rather than allowing a negative portfolio.

- Use one currency throughout. An annual spending input is not a monthly amount.
- Read the timing, inflation and fee definitions before comparing scenarios.
- Inspect the annual table and download CSV to retain the assumptions.
- Use the second scenario on supported tools to vary one assumption at a time. No result proves that stopping work is prudent.
Questions about this calculation
What happens after the portfolio reaches zero?
Requested cash continues for every model year. Funded cash is capped at available assets and the unfunded amount is recorded, so the table does not hide later spending needs.
Is the first unfunded year the same as the depletion year?
Not necessarily. A final withdrawal can be fully funded and leave exactly zero. An unfunded withdrawal may only appear in the next year.
Does a positive final balance prove a plan succeeds?
No. It only describes the entered deterministic path. It does not evaluate unknown longevity, actual return sequences, variable spending, taxes or probabilities.
