Dated Prices FX and Dividend Cash Without Double Counting

Use consistent quote direction, dates and cash classifications when maintaining a manually updated investment spreadsheet.

Write down the quote direction

A rate of 1.10 USD per 1 EUR converts EUR 100 into USD 110. The inverse quote performs a different multiplication. Our templates fix the reporting base to USD and label the rate direction explicitly. They do not retrieve a rate or decide which rate is legally appropriate for a tax calculation.

Keep current valuation separate from past receipts

A current position may be translated using a stated valuation snapshot and FX date. A historical dividend receipt should retain its own dated rate if you are recording it that way. Replacing every old payment rate with today’s spot rate changes the historical base-currency record. The payment log therefore uses a rate per foreign payment.

Respect the price date

A number in a price cell is not evidence that the quote is current or adjusted consistently. Record its date and source, and check corporate actions separately. The holdings template flags future dates, preserves genuine zero prices and leaves missing prices unavailable. It cannot discover a stale feed or a missing security automatically.

Reconcile gross cash to net cash

A payment can have gross income, withholding and a fee. Our example translates and rounds each component, then calculates net USD as gross less both deductions. This gives an explicit cash identity. A month with no entered payments is not a certified zero-income month, and withholding is not automatically the final tax due.

A reinvestment is also a purchase

If a broker turns net dividend cash into new shares, record the purchase in the records that determine units and remaining cost. The dividend log does not make that entry for you. Avoid counting the cash as still held when the current portfolio value already includes the acquired shares.

Check before consolidating records

Do not add a whole investment account and its individual positions to net worth as if they were separate assets. Do not mix a current market value with a second copy of its distributions or reserve cash. Save dated source files, keep unsupported values marked incomplete and reconcile the reporting scope before using a total.
