Review a financial template before using its results
A correct formula can still produce a misleading forecast when dates, source balances or assumptions are wrong. Review the relationships as well as the total.
Start with the opening position
Use reconciled balances for one date. Confirm assets equal liabilities plus equity. If cash, debt or retained earnings are missing, do not make equity the unexplained residual merely to achieve a zero difference. Trace the source records and document legitimate adjustments.
A balanced sheet proves the two displayed totals agree. It cannot establish that receivables are collectible, fixed assets are valued correctly or all liabilities have been recorded. Keep external source controls and evidence alongside your working files.
Check the first, middle and last month
Trace a monthly opening cash balance to the preceding closing balance. Change a late-month driver and confirm only that period and its dependent future results change. Verify that the final summary uses the last balance rather than the sum of all monthly balances.
Annual revenue and expense are flows and normally sum across the stated periods. Cash, debt and assets are stocks measured at a point in time. Annual margin divides matching annual profit and revenue. Adding or averaging monthly percentages without matching weights can misstate the annual ratio.
Use zero and blank intentionally
A zero can mean the business had no expense or revenue in that category. A blank can mean information is missing. These templates expose missing required numeric inputs through n.a. and Check inputs. Read those messages before considering the output complete.
Test a period with zero revenue, a missing required driver and a realistic negative cash balance. A model that replaces every problem with zero may look tidy while understating the information gap. Never repair an unexpected error by removing the formula that exposes it.
Inspect funding assumptions
When cash becomes negative, decide which real action could fund the gap or change its timing. Borrowing, capital injections, delayed spending and collection improvements are different assumptions. The projection adds financing only when you enter it.
Review requested loan repayment separately from the amount actually modelled. This workbook caps principal at available debt and shows an excess request. Check the tax, depreciation and interest timing assumptions against your business before treating the forecast as useful.
Keep a reproducible version
Save an unchanged example, a dated working forecast and source evidence separately. After importing to another spreadsheet application, recheck formulas, periods, charts and missing-input behaviour. Native Google Sheets verification has not been performed for these downloads.
