Portfolio Spreadsheet vs Tracking Software: A Migration Checklist

Choose between an editable workbook, a local snapshot analyzer and a full transaction-ledger application.

A workbook makes assumptions visible

Our investing template library offers editable holdings, net-worth and dividend workbooks. You control price and FX dates and can inspect formulas. That control also leaves data entry, backups and reconciliation with you.

A tracker may automate a different layer

Broker import, price refresh, dividend estimates and performance accounting are distinct capabilities. Verify each against the selected plan. A connected account can still have a missing transfer or misclassified fee; compare it with source statements rather than accepting a combined dashboard at face value.

Try the round trip before migration

Export a copied record from your present tool, map positions or transactions explicitly, import a small example and verify prices, fees and currencies. Then export again and test restoration. Our CSV is a documented holdings schema, not a claim of compatibility with every broker or provider.

Keep original and portable data

Store an independent dated source file and note how partial sales changed remaining cost. JSON from our analyzer preserves the full dataset and settings; filtered CSV contains only the selected holdings and applies spreadsheet-formula protection to text. It is not a full transaction history.
