Salary Inflation Adjustment: Nominal Pay vs Real Pay
Compare pay on the same frequency and working basis, then isolate the CPI adjustment.
Keep the salary inputs comparable
Use annual gross pay on both sides, or the same alternative frequency and net/gross basis. A change in hours, bonus rules or tax can explain a difference without being captured by CPI. Our tool does not estimate the market pay for an occupation.
Calculate the matching salary
If old pay is 50000 and the compatible CPI ratio is 1.10, 55000 is required to match that basket’s purchasing power. New pay of 54000 is 8% higher nominally but its real change is 1.08/1.10−1, about −1.818182%. Subtracting 10% from 8% is only an approximation.
Separate a national basket from your budget
The U.S. salary tool uses U.S. CPI-U. Your rent, medical costs, commuting and debt may differ. The ONS reference addresses a UK personal-spending illustration and does not create a U.S. personal index.
Preserve the decision inputs
Export the original amounts, endpoint months and data snapshot. The result is an index adjustment for the entered pay, not a tax return, employment recommendation or prediction of future wage growth. Use a budget or pay calculator for separate questions about actual disposable income.
