Options Signals: Contract Details, Payoffs and Evidence Checks
Evaluate an options signal by checking the exact contract, premium, expiration, exit assumptions and performance record before considering a trade.
Identify the full contract
A stock ticker and direction are insufficient. Record the underlying, call or put, strike, expiration, quantity and contract multiplier. Distinguish buying an option from writing one. Multi-leg positions require each leg and their combined execution assumptions. Corporate actions or nonstandard contracts can change deliverables; verify the actual contract specification.
Check a simple buyer payoff
For a fictional call with strike 100, premium 3 and multiplier 100, one contract costs 300 before fees. At expiration with underlying price 108, intrinsic value is 800 and net payoff is 500 before costs. At or below 100, it expires without intrinsic value and the premium is lost. The expiration break-even is 103 before costs. These are invented inputs for a simple long call, not a quote or a prediction.
Do not apply expiration arithmetic to every exit
Before expiration, an option’s price depends on more than immediate intrinsic value. A signal claiming a profit from a brief price spike must specify executable quotes and timing. A last-traded price is not necessarily the price available for the intended quantity. Include spread and multi-leg execution costs.
Demand a complete signal ledger
- Timestamped entry instruction and exact contract.
- Price convention and fill assumptions.
- Every modification, cancellation and exit.
- Expired and losing signals, not only highlighted winners.
- Capital or premium at risk and simultaneous exposure.
- Fees and the treatment of assignments where relevant.
Understand strategy-specific loss
The SEC’s options bulletin explains the differences between holders and writers. Some writing strategies can create losses beyond the premium received, and uncovered calls can involve unlimited potential loss. The long-call example above does not describe those strategies.
