Compare loan offers on the same date

Two loans can produce very different monthly payments while financing the same useful cash amount. Compare the remaining obligation as well as what has already left your account.

Begin with net proceeds

The loan amount on an offer can include fees you never receive as usable cash. A separately paid fee also reduces the initial economic cash benefit. Reconcile base amount, financed fees, withheld fees and upfront charges before treating two loans as substitutes for the same need.

The two-offer calculator allows you to enter mismatched proceeds, but it warns and withholds derived cost differences. The standalone loan results remain visible. A different amount of cash can be useful, but the comparison needs an explicit reason rather than a false cheaper-loan label.

Include principal still owed

Suppose one loan has a lower payment because it repays over 48 months rather than 36. After 24 months, it may have required less cash each month but still carry a larger debt. Add the payments already made to the principal still owed, then subtract the initial net proceeds to express financing cost at that common point.

In the invented example, both offers provide $9,800 net cash. After 24 monthly payments, the first schedule has a $1,323.10 modelled settlement cost and the second $1,487.82. Comparing the payment amounts alone would omit the unpaid principal that produces part of this difference.

Know the settlement assumption

This horizon calculation assumes you can settle at the recorded principal immediately after the selected payment. It excludes a prepayment penalty, additional daily accrued interest, release fees or any lender-specific payoff adjustment. Obtain an actual payoff quote before closing a real loan.

The view uses nominal dollars. It does not assume that money saved by a lower payment is invested, earns a return or is available for another purpose. Such assumptions belong in an additional analysis, not an invisible adjustment.

Retain both horizons

Inspect the common-date cost and the full-term cost. They answer different questions. Keep the full ledgers and the dated input scenario so the comparison can be reconstructed if a fee, term or rate changes. A model comparison is conditional, not a lender recommendation.

The CFPB explains fees on personal instalment loans, why a monthly payment alone is insufficient for comparison and the distinction between interest and APR. These support the borrowing concepts.
