Interest rates, loan fees and cash-flow rates

A contract interest rate drives interest on the loan balance. Fees and the amount of useful cash received affect the overall cost of borrowing. Keep those measures separate.

Trace where each fee goes

A fee paid from other money at time zero is upfront. A charge deducted from the stated base amount is withheld. A charge added to the balance is financed. The last treatment can create interest on the fee itself. All three increase the financing cost in this model, but they affect principal and cash receipt differently.

Read the quotation rather than entering the same origination charge into every fee box. Some quotes already include a financed charge in their stated loan balance. Reconcile the amount before financed fees so the tool does not add it twice. This input definition is a model convention and may differ from a lender’s label.

Understand the annualizations

The cash-flow solver uses initial net proceeds and the monthly payment sequence. Its monthly rate makes their present values agree. Multiplying by twelve gives a nominal annualized rate. Compounding the monthly rate over twelve periods gives an effective annual rate. The effective number is usually higher for a positive monthly rate, even though both describe the same monthly sequence.

Paying extra can reduce interest dollars while changing the annualized burden of fixed upfront fees. A higher annualized fee burden after early payoff therefore does not by itself mean you paid more total dollars. Inspect total cost, timing and cash needs together.

Use disclosed APR appropriately

The lender’s APR follows rules about included finance charges and timing. Our educational rate output does not certify those rules, decide which charges legally count or reproduce an odd first payment period. Compare the actual lender disclosures and ask for clarification when the interest rate, APR, amount financed and total payments appear inconsistent.

Check the schedule

Inspect the first month, a middle month and the final payment. Interest is charged on opening principal at the stated monthly convention. Principal reduction is total payment less interest. The final amount can adjust for cent rounding, and a payment cannot exceed the remaining amount owed. Retain a downloaded ledger when comparing revised quotations.

The CFPB explains fees on personal instalment loans, why a monthly payment alone is insufficient for comparison and the distinction between interest and APR. These support the borrowing concepts.
