Joining a Social Trading Network: Terms, Custody and Exit Checks

Evaluate a social trading network’s entities, incentives, account access, data exports and exit procedure before opening a relationship.

Map the relationship

Distinguish a discussion community from a broker-integrated signal service and an automatically managed account. Identify the legal entity behind each function. A community moderator, signal seller and account custodian do not necessarily have the same responsibilities or permissions.

Read the agreement as an operating document

AreaQuestion to resolve
Money and custodyWho holds funds and processes withdrawals?
ExecutionWho can initiate, change or close positions?
Fees and incentivesWho receives subscriptions, volume payments or referrals?
DataCan complete activity and cash records be exported?
ExitWhat happens to open positions after disconnection?

Inspect how rankings are constructed

Ask whether rankings include closed accounts, deposits, unrealized losses and leverage. Check the start date and whether returns are comparable across account sizes and cash flows. A social following is not an audited record. Sponsored placement and referral incentives should be distinguished from independent evaluation.

Plan the first review before joining

Choose a small, bounded evaluation scope and document the information you need. Keep terms and fee schedules with their observation dates. Reconcile the first statement to the activity export. If the service cannot explain an unexplained balance change, access restriction or unmatched position, pause the evaluation rather than filling the gap with assumptions.

Verify the exit route

Find the process for cancelling renewal, disconnecting execution and withdrawing available funds. These can be separate actions. Understand the treatment of pending orders and open positions before cancelling. The FCA’s copy-trading guidance describes a UK regulatory context; permissions and remedies must be checked for the actual jurisdiction. This page is a due-diligence framework, not an endorsement of a network.
