Read a bond ladder as a cash-flow calendar

Separate coupon income, redemption principal and maturity concentration.

Two kinds of receipt

A year with a large principal redemption can look like a large income year unless principal and coupons are separated. The planner shows both columns. Returning 1,000 of principal does not mean a 1,000 investment profit.

Time buckets are a convention

The model uses months from the chosen starting point, with every holding settling after a coupon date. It groups twelve months into one model year. Actual calendar dates, business-day adjustments and irregular coupon periods need a more specific schedule.

Rollover is a new decision

A maturing holding becomes cash in this plan. The tool does not assume an available replacement yield, purchase or guarantee. To explore another ladder, enter a separate set of assumptions and compare the cash-flow calendars.

Concentration stays visible

The largest annual principal bucket highlights uneven maturities. It measures timing concentration only; it is not an assessment of issuer diversification, default risk or whether the ladder fits a person’s spending needs.
