Options Backtesting: Chains Sessions and Fill Assumptions
Separate a real historical options workflow from an underlying chart or a payoff model before comparing backtests.
An underlying chart is only one input
A strategy on SPY shares and a strategy on expiring SPY option contracts use different data and accounting. Options testing needs historical strikes and expirations, quote availability, leg selection rules and a fill convention. A payoff diagram based on a pricing model is another task, not automatically a historical execution test.
Check contract and session coverage
Confirm the symbol list, start/end history, regular versus extended sessions and timestamp convention. Define entry timing, expiration selection and what happens when a quote or strike is absent. OptionOmega’s current pricing and older setup documentation differ in their symbol lists, so verify the actual current entitlement rather than treating an old list as complete.
Record a multi-leg fill model
Midpoint, bid/ask and a configurable adverse spread can produce different simulated outcomes. Specify commissions per contract and per leg, partial fills, exits, stop handling and whether a trigger can be observed with the available resolution. A platform’s options support does not prove that it models every liquidity or assignment event for your strategy.
Separate pricing/modeling from backtesting
OptionOmega Lite is a modeling tier; the selected Essential workflow includes backtesting. QuantConnect documents options asset classes and configurable reality models in a code-first environment. These are different ways to express and verify a strategy. No direct provider accuracy or speed benchmark was performed for this directory.
Use one controlled example
Choose a defined-risk structure with explicit contracts, quantity, entry date/time and planned exit. Inspect what happens at an expiration and at an absent quote. Save all assumptions and the order/trade record. If the tool cannot expose the detail needed to reconcile the example, record that limitation rather than assuming the headline profit establishes correctness.
Avoid selecting on the best historical curve
Repeatedly searching dates, strikes and entry filters consumes the same history as a development sample. Preserve a chronological period that was not used for decisions and account for the number of experiments. No result proves future execution or returns. Our share-like SMA lab does not model options and should not be used as an options calculator.
